An American has been bashed with a steel by a local Muay Thai boxing performer, was successfully apprehended and has been remanded in police custody pending further investigations.Pattaya, the 29th of March 2010
3:00am on Monday, police Captain Santiphon Phuwadonkanok (Pattaya Police Investigator) was notified of an assault that had taken place directly in front of the Pattaya Police Station on Soi 9, Pattaya Beach Road. Cpt. Phuwadonkanok and a team of police were dispatched to the scene immediately to investigate the incident further.
Arriving at the scene, officer observed a large crowd had gathered around the area where a foreign man was lying unconscious and bleeding on the footpath adjacent to Pattaya Beach. The injured man, Mr. Fredric (last name withheld) [45] an American national, was suffering from several cuts and some severe bruising to his head after having been struck with a steel umbrella peg. Immediate first-aid was applied to Mr. Fredric before he was rushed to the Pattaya Memorial Hospital.
Also at the scene was the offender, Mr. Boonmi Arunsawad [33] a local Muay Thai Boxing performer at the nearby ‘Best Friend Bar.’ Mr. Arunsawad was being detained by several witnesses who had successfully apprehended him following the assault.
Under interrogation, Mr. Arunsawad explained in a severely intoxicated manor that he had been approached by Mr. Fredric who had requested that he procure him a lady for the night. Not understanding Mr. Fredric, the pair began to argue at which point Mr. Arunsawad claims he was punched by Mr. Fredric which caused him to become enraged and hit him with the metal umbrella peg until he was unconscious.
Police are extremely reluctant to believe Mr. Arunsawad’s claims as he is reportedly a known trouble maker in the area around Beach Road and was also severely intoxicated at the time. A service girl who had witnessed the assault explained to police that Mr. Arunsawad appeared to try and rob Mr. Fredric at which point he fought back and was hit with the steel peg.
Mr. Arunsawad has now been arrested and will remain in police custody pending further judicial proceedings. Officers will interview Mr. Fredric once he has fully recovered from his injuries.
